What does that dashboard light mean?
Two of these mean pull over now. Most of the rest mean book it in. Knowing which is which is the whole point of this page.
Everything else
Brake warning light
An exclamation mark in a circle, or the word BRAKE, in red
Battery / charging system light
A battery shape with + and - terminals, usually red
Power steering warning light
A steering wheel, sometimes with an exclamation mark, amber or red
Transmission temperature light
A gear or cog with a thermometer, amber or red
Check engine light
An engine outline, amber — or flashing
ABS warning light
The letters ABS in a circle, amber
Tire pressure light
A horseshoe shape with an exclamation mark, amber
Airbag / SRS light
A person with a circle in front of them, red or amber
Traction or stability control light
A car with squiggly lines beneath it, amber
Low fuel light
A fuel pump shape, amber
The colour tells you most of it
Red means stop and deal with it. Amber means something has faulted and needs looking at, but you are not in immediate trouble. Green and blue are not warnings at all — they are telling you a headlight or a cruise control is switched on.
