Diesel particulate filter (DPF) light

A dotted box or exhaust-filter symbol on a diesel.

GET CHECKED SOON

What it means

A DPF traps soot from diesel exhaust and periodically burns it off (regeneration). This light means soot has built up and the filter needs to regenerate — frequently because the car has only done short, low-speed trips.

What to try

Where safe and legal, a steady drive at higher speed for 15–20 minutes often lets it complete a regeneration and the light goes out. If it does not clear, or other lights join it, get it checked before it blocks fully.

Why not ignore it

A fully blocked DPF can force a limp mode and a costly forced regeneration or replacement.

Warning-light symbols and meanings vary by vehicle — always check your owner’s manual. This is general guidance based on what the light indicates, not a physical inspection, and a light on its own never names a failed part.
