Red brake warning light
Stop and check the parking brake first. If it's on, release it and the light should go out — that's the end of it. If the light stays on with the parking brake released, don't keep driving. Have the car towed or driven the shortest possible distance to get it looked at, and take it easy on the brake pedal on the way.
This light means the car has detected something wrong with the brake system itself, not just a reminder that the parking brake is up. Most cars use the same light for both, which is why it's worth ruling out the parking brake before assuming the worst.
What it usually means
Past the parking brake, the most common cause is low brake fluid. Brake fluid runs in a sealed system, so if the level has dropped, fluid is getting out somewhere — a leak at a wheel cylinder, caliper, brake line, or the master cylinder itself. Worn brake pads can also trigger this light on some cars, since as pads wear down, fluid in the caliper has to travel farther and the reservoir level drops slightly. Less often, it's a failing brake pressure sensor or a problem with the ABS module talking to the brake system.
Why it matters
A brake system that's losing fluid is one that can lose pressure entirely, and that means reduced stopping power or, in a worst case, a pedal that goes to the floor with little effect. That's the reason this light gets treated as serious rather than something to watch for a week.
What it usually takes to put right
We start by checking the fluid level and looking for the leak — wheels, lines, and the master cylinder are the usual places. If it's worn pads, that's a straightforward pad and possibly rotor job. If it's a leak, the fix depends entirely on where it is: a wheel cylinder or caliper is a contained repair, but a leaking master cylinder or a line means more work. We won't know which of these it is, or what it costs, until we've had it on the lift and traced the fluid. If the sensor itself is at fault and the brakes check out fine mechanically, that's a simpler diagnostic job, but we don't assume that until we've confirmed the fluid and pads are good first.
