Straight answers, no surprises
The questions people are afraid to ask a repair shop — and the promises we actually keep.
Paying a shop you don't know to fix a car you can't see inside is an act of trust, and plenty of shops have spent that trust badly. So here are straight answers to the questions people are afraid to ask — and the promises we actually keep.
Do you charge a fee just to look at my car — and does it come off the repair?
Yes we charge for diagnosis, and yes it comes off the repair if we do the work — you never pay twice. Real diagnosis means testing the actual circuit, wiring and parts to find what is genuinely wrong, instead of guessing off the trouble code and swapping parts on your money. That takes shop time and is the part worth doing right. But the moment you approve the repair, that diagnostic fee applies toward your final bill.
Will you charge me twice just to diagnose one problem?
No. One problem gets one diagnostic fee — we do not stack a "level one" charge and then a "level two" charge to answer the same question. If we open it up and find a genuinely separate second fault, we stop and explain that before doing anything, so you are never surprised by a second diagnostic charge for the thing you already paid us to find.
Can I get a price over the phone before I come in?
For common jobs, yes. Brakes, an oil service, an alignment, a battery — call or text and we will give you an honest ballpark range up front. For anything that needs real diagnosis — an electrical gremlin, a check-engine light, an intermittent fault — we will not quote a number over the phone that we would only have to take back the minute we see the car. Instead we will tell you exactly what the diagnostic involves and what it costs, so there is no bait-and-switch when you arrive.
Can you get me in soon, or is it a three-week wait like the dealer?
Often the same day or the next. When the dealer is booked out for weeks, we can usually get you in far sooner — give us a call and we will tell you honestly what today and this week actually look like. Fast is only useful if the work is done right, so we will never rush a diagnosis to clear the lot, but we know a car you cannot drive is not a next-month problem.
Will the price change between drop-off and pickup?
Not without a phone call and your say-so. We agree the price with you before any work begins, and nothing gets done until you approve it. If we open something up and genuinely find more, we stop and call you before touching it — you decide whether it goes ahead. The estimate is the number, unless you approve a change.
Are you going to charge dealer prices?
No. Our labor rate is one of the lowest in the area and well under what the dealer charges — our overhead is lower, and we pass that saving straight on to you. And if you have a written estimate from another local shop for the same work, bring it in and we will do our best to beat it. Honest, quality work does not have to cost dealer money.
Are you going to find $3,000 of other things I didn't come in for?
No. We fix what you came in for, and anything else we notice gets sorted into three honest buckets: needs doing now, worth planning soon, or just noted for later. We do not move things into the urgent pile to fill the day, and we will happily tell you a part still has plenty of life left in it. You choose what to do and what to skip.
How do I know a recommendation is real and not just a sales pitch?
Because you can see it. Our inspections come with photos and video sent to your phone, so when we say a part is worn, you are looking at your own car's part — not taking our word for it. If we cannot show you why something needs doing, we should not be charging you to do it.
Do I have to do everything on the list?
No — it is your car and your call. We will tell you honestly what is genuinely urgent, what can wait, and what does not need doing at all, and you pick what to fix now. Sorting the safety items first and planning the rest over a few visits is completely normal, and we will help you sequence it.
I already know what's wrong — I have the codes. Do I still pay to be told?
No. If you have already pulled the codes, bring them — reading a code is an over-the-counter thing, not a paid diagnosis. What a code tells you is the system, not always the exact part, so we will confirm it matches what the car is actually doing before anyone spends money on parts. We are not going to charge you to repeat what you already told us.
The last shop took three visits on my A/C and it's still not fixed. How is this different?
By diagnosing it properly the first time instead of throwing parts at it. Air conditioning and cooling faults are exactly where guesswork gets expensive — a leak, a weak compressor, a stuck blend door and a low charge can all look the same from the driver's seat. We pressure-test the system, use dye to find the actual leak, and check the whole loop before we quote, so the repair is based on what is genuinely wrong rather than a hopeful part swap.
What if the repair doesn't fix it — am I paying to diagnose it all over again?
No. If we diagnose a problem, you approve the repair, and that repair does not resolve the problem we identified, the follow-up diagnosis is on us. We stand behind our diagnosis, not just the parts — a repair that does not fix what you came in for is our miss to sort out, not a second bill for you.
Will you tell me if it's actually safe to drive?
Yes, plainly. If something is a real safety problem we will tell you to stop driving it, and if it is fine to carry on for a while we will tell you that too. We are not going to dress up a can-wait item as an emergency to pressure you into work today — a straight answer on what is safe is the whole point.
