4WD system warning

A 4WD or 4x4 symbol, sometimes flashing.

GENERALLY OK TO PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Book it in when you can · Amber means get it checked

What it means

On part-time 4WD vehicles this light can flash when the system cannot fully engage or disengage a mode. On others it signals a fault in the transfer case or its controls.

Can I drive?

Normal (2WD) driving is usually fine, but do not count on 4WD until it is sorted, and avoid leaving it stuck in a 4WD mode on dry pavement, which can bind the drivetrain.

Common causes

A transfer-case actuator, a switch, low fluid, or a control fault. Transfer-case and 4WD work is something we take on regularly.

Warning-light symbols and meanings vary by vehicle — always check your owner’s manual. This is general guidance based on what the light indicates, not a physical inspection, and a light on its own never names a failed part.
