Transmission warning light

A gear symbol, sometimes with an exclamation mark or a thermometer.

What it means

The transmission control system has detected a problem. To protect itself it may hold a single gear (limp mode), shift harshly, or delay engagement.

Can I drive?

Gently and briefly, to get it somewhere for diagnosis — but transmission trouble rarely gets cheaper by waiting. If it is overheating (a thermometer symbol) or barely moving, do not keep driving.

Common causes

Low or degraded fluid, a solenoid or sensor fault, or an internal issue. Fluid condition is one of the first things worth checking.

Warning-light symbols and meanings vary by vehicle — always check your owner’s manual. This is general guidance based on what the light indicates, not a physical inspection, and a light on its own never names a failed part.

Want to know what is causing the warning?

Auto Star can read the codes, inspect the vehicle, and find the underlying cause before recommending any repairs — you see what we find and approve the work first.
