Oil Change Services in Graham

Most cars on the road today don't need an oil change every 3,000 miles. That number comes from an older era of engine oil and it sticks around because it's easy to remember, not because it's accurate. What your engine actually needs depends on the oil spec the manufacturer calls for, how many miles you put on the truck, and whether you're towing, idling a lot, or doing mostly short trips around Graham in cold weather. We change the oil based on that, not a sticker left by the last shop.

A standard oil change is oil and filter, and we check the obvious things while the car's up: fluid levels, drips underneath, tire condition. If you've bought your own oil and filter, bring it in and we'll install it. Some cars also need the transmission fluid changed or exchanged on a schedule, and if you tow or drive a 4x4, the transfer case fluid matters too. We'll tell you if your vehicle is due for one of those instead of, or along with, an oil change.

Signs you're overdue: the oil looks black and gritty on the dipstick, the engine sounds louder or ticks on startup, or the oil life light is on. None of those mean the engine is damaged yet, but waiting too long past due does shorten its life, especially on higher-mileage engines that already use a little oil.

An oil change is also when a lot of other small things turn up. If your check engine light is on, or a truck is stuttering under load, that's usually not the oil, it's more often an ignition coil or spark plugs, and we can look at both while the car is here. Same with electrical stuff people notice around the same time, blinkers not working, a tail light out, a clicking sound after changing a battery. Cheap to fix if we catch it early, more of a headache if it sits.

On an older vehicle with real mileage on it, we'll be straight with you if a full transmission service isn't worth it, or if a fluid change won't fix a problem that's mechanical, not lubrication. We'd rather tell you that up front than sell you a service that doesn't change anything.

Open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, at 28801 Meridian E. Call (253) 375-7057 if you want to ask what your specific car actually needs before you book anything.

Questions about oil change services

How often should I change my oil?

Follow what the manufacturer says for your engine, which for most modern cars on full synthetic is somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. The old 3,000-mile rule is a holdover from conventional oil and mostly sells oil changes.

Do I need full synthetic oil?

If your manufacturer specifies it, yes — using conventional in an engine designed for synthetic can void warranty cover and shorten engine life. If it does not, synthetic still holds up better under heat and long intervals, but it is a choice rather than a requirement.
