ABS Warning Light

You can keep driving, but get it looked at soon. Your regular brakes are still working, so this is not a stop-the-car situation. What's off is the anti-lock system, the part that stops your wheels from locking up and lets you keep steering during a hard or emergency stop. Without it, braking hard on a wet or gravel road is more likely to send you into a skid.

The light means the car's computer has found a fault somewhere in the ABS system and switched it off rather than let it run with bad information. It's a safety measure, not a breakdown.

The most common cause is a wheel speed sensor, either dirty, damaged, or wired loose. These sensors sit near each wheel hub and tell the computer how fast that wheel is turning. A close second is a wiring problem, a chafed wire or a bad connector, often from age or road debris. Low brake fluid can also trip the light, since the ABS module needs enough fluid pressure to work correctly. Less often, the fault is in the ABS pump or control module itself.

Fixing it starts with plugging in a scan tool to read the fault code, which points to the specific sensor or circuit involved. From there it's usually a matter of testing that sensor and its wiring to confirm the problem, then cleaning, repairing, or replacing the part. A wheel speed sensor is a fairly straightforward job. A wiring fault takes longer to track down since it means following the harness to find where it's damaged. A bad ABS module is the least common outcome but the most involved to sort out.

One thing worth checking yourself first: make sure your regular brake fluid is topped up, since low fluid alone can trigger this light. If it's not that, it's worth having someone check it properly rather than guessing, since the sensor and the wiring can look fine and still be the problem.
