Slow Starts and No-Starts
Cold mornings are when this shows up. The engine cranks slow, or it just clicks, or the dash lights come on but nothing turns over at all. Most people assume it's the battery and go buy a new one. Sometimes that's right. Sometimes the battery is fine and the problem is the alternator not charging it, a starter on its way out, or corroded terminals not passing enough current to turn the engine. We load-test the battery before we sell you one, because replacing a good battery doesn't fix a bad alternator.
What We Actually Check
If a car won't start or is hard to start, we test the battery, the starter, and the alternator, not just the one that seems obvious. A weak alternator will slowly drain a good battery over days, so you can replace the battery, feel fine for a week, and end up back where you started. If you've had to jump-start the car more than once in a short stretch, that's usually an alternator or a draw somewhere in the electrical system, not a battery that's simply old.
Electrical Draws
Sometimes a battery goes dead overnight even though the car ran fine the day before. That points to something pulling power while the car is off, a interior light, a module that isn't going to sleep, an aftermarket stereo or alarm wired wrong. Finding a draw takes time. We isolate circuits one at a time until we find the one still pulling current. It's not a five-minute job, and we'll tell you that going in rather than guess and charge you for guessing.
Terminals and Connections
Corroded or loose battery terminals cause a lot of the same symptoms as a dead battery, slow crank, dash lights flickering, intermittent no-start. This is a cheaper fix than a new battery and worth ruling out first. We clean or replace terminal ends as needed.
When It's Not Worth Fixing
On an older car, if the alternator's failing and the battery is also several years old, replacing both usually makes sense rather than fixing one and having the other fail in a month. But if you're chasing an intermittent electrical draw on a car that's got other problems piling up, or the wiring issue is buried in aftermarket work someone else did years ago, we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth chasing further.
