Drivetrain & Axle Repair in Graham, WA
If your car clicks or pops when you turn, especially pulling out of a driveway or turning into a parking lot, that's almost always a CV axle problem. The constant velocity joint on the end of the axle is worn out, or the rubber boot around it has torn and let the grease out. Once the boot goes, dirt gets in and the joint doesn't last long after that. It's a common repair and not usually expensive as drivetrain work goes.
Vibration at speed is a different problem, and it can be a few different things. A worn U-joint on the driveshaft, a bent or unbalanced driveshaft, or a bad CV axle can all cause shaking that gets worse the faster you go. Sometimes it's tires or wheel balance instead, which is why we drive the car and check before assuming it's the drivetrain. No point replacing a driveshaft if the real issue is a $20 wheel weight.
Differential noise is harder for most drivers to place. It usually sounds like a whine or a hum that changes with speed, or a clunk when you shift from drive to reverse. If it's low on fluid, that's a quick fix. If the gears themselves are worn, that's a bigger job and on some vehicles it's close to what a used differential would cost. We'll tell you which situation you're in before we start anything.
4WD trouble covers a lot of ground: won't engage, grinds going in, or the front and rear axles seem to fight each other in turns. On trucks and SUVs this can be a vacuum actuator, a transfer case issue, or the front axle itself. We check it a step at a time rather than guessing and swapping parts.
Worth saying plainly: on an older vehicle with high mileage, a differential rebuild or a full 4WD system repair sometimes costs more than the vehicle is worth. We'll give you the honest number and let you decide, rather than talk you into a repair that doesn't make sense for the car. CV axles and U-joints are almost always worth fixing. Differentials and transfer cases depend on the vehicle and what else is going on with it.
