Every fall, as the mornings turn cold, the same question comes up: should you let your car warm up before you drive it? A lot of us grew up watching a parent start the car and let it sit in the driveway for ten minutes on a frosty morning, engine running, while everyone finished getting ready. It felt like taking care of the car. The honest answer, for basically every car built in the last thirty years, is that long idle warm-up is unnecessary, wastes fuel, and does not do the thing people think it does. But there is a version of warming up that genuinely matters, and it is worth knowing the difference — especially heading into a wet, cold Pacific Northwest winter.
The warm-up habit is a holdover from carbureted engines. Older cars used a carburetor to mix fuel and air, and when it was cold, that mixture was unreliable — the engine would stumble, stall, and run poorly until everything warmed up. Letting the car idle for a few minutes really did help it run properly before you drove off. That was sound advice, for that technology.
Modern cars do not have carburetors. They have fuel injection managed by a computer that reads the temperature and adjusts the mixture instantly, thousands of times a second. Your car is ready to drive within seconds of starting, cold or not, because the electronics handle the cold-start adjustment automatically. The mechanical reason for the long warm-up simply is not there anymore. What survived is the habit.
Here is the part that surprises people: an engine idling in the driveway warms up slowly, and it warms up faster when you drive it. An idling engine is barely working, so it produces little heat and takes a long time to reach operating temperature. Driving gently puts it under light load, which generates heat far more efficiently and brings the whole car — engine, transmission, tires — up to temperature much quicker. So the paradox is that the way to get your car warmed up soonest is to start it, give it a few seconds, and then drive off gently.
“Gently” is the operative word. The one real grain of truth in the warm-up idea is that a cold engine should not be worked hard. Cold oil is thicker and takes a short while to circulate fully and coat everything, so for the first few minutes of driving you want to keep the revs modest and avoid hard acceleration. You are not idling to warm up; you are driving easy while it warms up. That gets the oil where it needs to be and the temperature up, without the wasted fuel of sitting still.
It is not just that it is unnecessary. There are small costs to it.

On a frosty or foggy Graham morning, you should not drive off until your windows are properly clear, and that means giving the defroster a little time and scraping any ice off the outside rather than peering through a porthole. Driving with iced or fogged glass is a real, common cause of winter crashes, and it is entirely avoidable. So the honest winter advice is: start the car, turn the defroster on, scrape the ice while it works, and drive off once you can actually see — which is usually a couple of minutes, not ten. If your defrost is slow or your air conditioning has quit, which affects how fast the glass clears, that is worth sorting before winter.
