Fluid Services

Fluids are the part of car care nobody gets excited about. Brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, differential fluid, transfer case fluid, power steering fluid. None of it is expensive to change on a schedule. All of it is expensive to ignore. Most of the transmission and brake system failures we see at our Graham shop trace back to fluid that should have been changed years earlier and wasn't.

Brake fluid pulls moisture out of the air over time, even in a sealed system. Moisture lowers the boiling point of the fluid and lets corrosion start inside the calipers and the lines. You won't feel this happening on a normal drive. You'll notice it when the pedal feels a little softer than it used to, or when a caliper starts to stick. A brake fluid flush runs the old fluid out of the lines and replaces it with fresh fluid. If you're already in for a brake job, we usually flush the fluid at the same time since the system is already open.

Transmission fluid is the one people put off longest, mostly because a transmission doesn't complain until it's already in trouble. Old fluid gets darker, starts to smell burnt, and loses its ability to protect the internal clutches and bands. Shifts get rougher. Sometimes there's a delay before the transmission engages in gear. On most automatics, we drain and refill the fluid and filter, or do a fluid exchange, depending on what the transmission calls for. Some transmissions want a specific fluid, not just whatever's cheapest, and we use what the manufacturer specifies.

Power steering fluid, differential fluid, and transfer case fluid are the quieter jobs. They don't come up often, but low or dirty fluid in any of them will eventually wear out a pump, a gear set, or a case. If you drive a 4x4 or all-wheel-drive vehicle and you're not sure the transfer case or differential fluid has ever been changed, it's worth asking.

One honest note: on a high-mileage transmission that's already slipping or shifting hard, a fluid change can sometimes make things worse, not better. Old fluid can be the only thing still holding worn clutches together. If that's where your vehicle is, we'll tell you straight rather than sell you a flush that won't fix the real problem.

Questions about fluid services

How do I know which fluid is actually due? There's no warning light for most of these.
Mileage is the best guide, and it's different for each fluid — brake fluid and coolant on one schedule, differential and transfer case fluid on a much longer one. When you come in we check color, smell, and condition rather than just going by the odometer, and we'll tell you honestly if something looks fine and isn't due yet.
Is it safe to keep driving if my transmission fluid looks dark or my pedal feels a little soft?
Usually yes for a while, but it's not something to ignore indefinitely. A soft brake pedal especially is worth getting looked at soon, since it can mean moisture in the fluid lowering the boiling point. Dark transmission fluid on its own isn't an emergency, but if you're also feeling rough or hesitant shifts, that's a sign it's been overdue for a bit.
What's the difference between a flush and a drain-and-fill, and which do I need?
A drain-and-fill just replaces the fluid that comes out on its own, leaving some old fluid behind. A flush pushes fluid through the whole system to get more of the old stuff out. Which one makes sense depends on the fluid, the vehicle, and how far gone the old fluid is — we'll tell you which applies rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.
What actually happens if I just keep putting this off?
Nothing dramatic right away, which is exactly why it's easy to skip. But old brake fluid corrodes lines and calipers from the inside, old coolant stops protecting against corrosion in the cooling system, and old transmission or differential fluid leads to wear that ends up as a much bigger repair than the fluid change would have been.
Roughly what does a fluid service cost?
It varies a lot depending on which fluid it is and the vehicle — brake fluid and coolant are generally on the cheaper end, transmission, differential, and transfer case fluid cost more depending on capacity and access. We won't give a number over the phone without knowing the vehicle, but we'll always tell you the price before we start any work.
