Why Is My Car Losing Power?
A car that feels down on power — sluggish, struggling uphill, or dropping into a reduced-power mode — can be a fuel, air, ignition, exhaust, engine-management or transmission issue. A few questions narrow it down.

What can cause this?
Loss of power means the engine is not making what it should — often a fuel, air or ignition shortfall, a clogged exhaust, or a sensor feeding the computer bad information. Modern cars also pull power on purpose (limp mode) to protect themselves when they detect a fault, which is a clue in itself.
When should I stop driving?
Power loss with overheating, or with a flashing check-engine light and shaking, is a stop-now situation. Sudden power loss in traffic is also worth getting off the road for — get somewhere safe, then have it diagnosed before driving normally.
What you can safely check
- Whether the check-engine light is on or flashing
- whether the temperature is normal
- whether it is shaking or misfiring
- whether it goes into reduced-power mode
What a mechanic may check
- Stored trouble codes and live data
- fuel delivery and pressure
- air intake and sensors
- ignition
- the exhaust for a restriction
- the transmission if indicated
