What P0300 means
The computer is seeing misfires that it can't pin to one cylinder. It jumps around, one time it's cylinder 2, next time it's cylinder 4. That's the "random/multiple" part. If it were always the same cylinder, you'd get a P0301, P0302, and so on instead. A misfire just means that cylinder didn't burn its fuel properly that stroke. The code names the symptom. It doesn't tell you which part caused it.
Is it safe to drive
Don't keep driving it, or at least don't keep driving it hard. A misfire dumps unburned fuel into the exhaust, and that fuel can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter, which is a much more expensive repair than whatever caused the misfire. If the check engine light is flashing rather than steady, that's the car telling you this is happening right now and it's worse. Stop and get it looked at before driving further. If it's a steady light and the car drives fine otherwise, you can drive it to us, but don't put it off. Watch for rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, or a smell of raw fuel.
Common causes, most likely first
Worn spark plugs are the most common cause across the board. After that, ignition coils, especially on engines with one coil per cylinder, since a weak coil produces the same random pattern. Vacuum leaks cause this too, because they lean out the mixture unevenly across cylinders. A clogged or failing fuel injector can do it. Old or bad gas, or a fuel pump that's losing pressure under load, both fit the pattern. Low compression from worn piston rings or a bad head gasket will cause a random misfire that no amount of plugs or coils will fix. Which of these is likely depends some on the engine and the mileage. High-mileage cars with original plugs and coils, plugs first. Newer cars with a check engine light that came on suddenly, more likely a vacuum leak or a single failing coil.
What diagnosis involves and rough cost
The scanner gives us the code, but it doesn't name the part. Tony pulls the freeze frame data to see what the car was doing when it happened, checks fuel trims, and does a compression test if plugs and coils look fine. Sometimes he'll swap a coil between cylinders to see if the misfire follows it, which points straight at that coil rather than something else. Plugs and coils are a relatively inexpensive fix, usually in the low hundreds depending on the engine and how many cylinders need coils. A vacuum leak repair varies with where it is. Fuel system work and anything involving compression, meaning rings, valves, or a head gasket, costs a lot more and is a different conversation. We won't know which category this is until we've actually looked at it, so we're not going to quote a number over the phone.
Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
