Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected

What P0306 means

Your engine's computer watches how fast the crankshaft speeds up after each cylinder fires. Cylinder 6 is firing late, weak, or not at all, often enough that the computer noticed a pattern instead of a one-time hiccup. The code names the symptom, not the cause. It does not tell you whether the problem is a spark plug, a coil, a fuel issue, or something mechanical inside that cylinder.

Is it safe to drive

This one is not something to put off. A misfire means unburned fuel is passing through that cylinder into the exhaust, and that raw fuel can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter, which is a much more expensive repair than fixing the misfire itself. If the check engine light is flashing rather than steady, that is the computer telling you the misfire is active right now and doing damage as you drive. In that case, stop driving it and get it looked at. If the light is steady on and the car otherwise drives normally, it is reasonable to drive it to us, but don't put more miles on it than you need to, and avoid hard acceleration or towing until it's checked.

Watch for a rough idle, a stumble under load, a smell of unburned fuel, or a noticeable loss of power. Any of those getting worse is a sign to stop sooner rather than later.

Common causes, most likely first

Spark plugs are the most common cause, especially on higher-mileage cars that haven't had them changed in a while. Next most common is an ignition coil, either the one for cylinder 6 specifically (on engines with one coil per cylinder) or a coil pack shared across cylinders. After that, look at fuel delivery to that cylinder — a clogged or failing injector. Less common but real possibilities: a vacuum leak affecting that cylinder, low compression from a worn valve or piston ring, or on some engines, a wiring or connector problem specific to cylinder 6. Which of these is likeliest depends a lot on the engine — a V6 with a coil pack shared across cylinders behaves differently from one with individual coils, and we'd want to know which setup your car has before guessing.

What diagnosis involves and rough cost

We start by pulling the actual fault data, not just the code, and checking things like fuel trims and misfire counts. Then we typically swap or test the spark plug and coil for cylinder 6 specifically, since that's the fastest way to rule in or out the most common causes. If that doesn't solve it, we move to a compression test or fuel injector test on that cylinder. Diagnostic time alone usually runs somewhere in the range of one hour, more if it turns out to be something buried in the engine rather than plugs or a coil. Repair cost varies a lot depending on what we find — a plug and coil is a modest repair, an injector costs more, and something mechanical inside the cylinder is a bigger job. We won't know which one it is until we've actually checked, and we won't sell you a coil or an injector on a guess.
