Why Won’t My Car Accelerate?
When the car will not pick up speed the way it should — the engine revs but it barely moves, the pedal feels dead, or it crawls — the cause can be in the engine, the throttle system, or the transmission and drivetrain.

What can cause this?
Poor acceleration splits into two families: the engine is not making power (fuel, air, ignition, a clogged exhaust, or a sensor fault), or the power is not reaching the wheels (the transmission or drivetrain). The tell-tale is whether the engine revs while the car stays slow — that points at the driveline rather than the engine.
When should I stop driving?
A flashing check-engine light or overheating alongside this is a stop-now situation. Otherwise, a car that cannot accelerate normally is a safety concern in traffic — get it somewhere safe and have it diagnosed before relying on it.

- Whether the engine revs without the car speeding up
- whether the check-engine light is flashing
- whether the temperature is normal
- any unusual noises or smells

- the transmission and its fluid
- fuel and air delivery
