Why Is My Car Overheating?
An engine that keeps running hot can be seriously damaged. The first step is working out what the temperature gauge or warning is showing, and whether there are other signs of overheating.
This is general guidance, not a diagnosis. It is based on what you can see, hear, smell or read — not a physical inspection of your vehicle. A symptom or a trouble code narrows things down; it does not name the failed part, and the same one can mean different things on different cars. Confirming the actual cause takes the car in front of someone. When in doubt, treat it as more serious, not less.

What can cause this?
Overheating almost always comes back to the cooling system not moving heat away fast enough — low coolant, a leak, a stuck thermostat, a cooling fan that is not running, a tired water pump, or a blockage. Because several parts share the job, the symptom narrows it down but does not name the part on its own.
When should I stop driving?
If the gauge is in the red, there is steam, or the engine is running badly while hot, stop somewhere safe and switch it off — continuing is how an overheating engine becomes a cracked head or a blown gasket. Never open the radiator or coolant cap while the engine is hot.
What you can safely check
- Whether the temperature warning is still on
- once the engine is fully cool, the coolant reservoir level as your owner’s manual describes
- whether coolant is visibly leaking or pooling
- whether any hoses look split, loose or soaked
What a mechanic may check
- A cooling-system pressure test
- the thermostat and water pump
- the radiator and cooling fan operation
- coolant condition and level
- a head-gasket check if the symptoms point that way
