Why Does My Car Idle Rough?
A rough or uneven idle — shaking, a bouncing RPM, or feeling like it might stall when you are stopped — usually points at the engine not getting a clean, steady mix of fuel, air and spark.
This is general guidance, not a diagnosis. It is based on what you can see, hear, smell or read — not a physical inspection of your vehicle. A symptom or a trouble code narrows things down; it does not name the failed part, and the same one can mean different things on different cars. Confirming the actual cause takes the car in front of someone. When in doubt, treat it as more serious, not less.

What can cause this?
A steady idle needs a clean balance of fuel, air and spark. Worn plugs, a vacuum leak, a dirty idle-air or throttle system, or a struggling sensor can all upset that balance and make the engine shudder at a stop. A code reader narrows it, but the cause still has to be confirmed on the car.
When should I stop driving?
A rough idle by itself is usually a get-it-checked-soon issue rather than a stop-now one. The exception is a flashing check-engine light, which means an active misfire — stop driving and have it looked at before it damages the exhaust.

- whether it smooths out as you drive
- whether it is worse cold or with the A/C on
