What does P0138 mean?
The downstream sensor on bank 1 reads high (rich or shorted).
Can I drive with P0138?
A steady check-engine light with the car otherwise behaving normally usually means you can drive carefully to get it diagnosed — but a flashing light, shaking, lost power, or a strong fuel smell changes that. Possible causes
Possible causes include — not “the part is definitely bad”:
- A rich condition
- A shorted sensor or wiring
- A contaminated sensor
What P0138 does not prove
It does not prove the oxygen sensor has failed. Its reading can be affected by exhaust leaks, the fuel mixture, wiring, or the heater circuit — the sensor is often the messenger, not the fault.
What you can safely check
- Whether the light is steady or flashing
- Whether fuel economy has dropped
- For any exhaust smell or obvious leak
What a shop may check
An example diagnostic direction, not a guaranteed procedure:
- Scan tool and live oxygen/air-fuel sensor data
- The sensor heater circuit and wiring
- A check for exhaust leaks near the sensor
- Fuel trims to see how the engine is compensating
What not to do
- Don’t just swap the oxygen sensor named in the code
- Don’t ignore an exhaust leak that can fool the sensor
Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
