What P0141 means
This code is about the heater circuit for the second oxygen sensor on bank 1 — that's the sensor located after the catalytic converter. Modern O2 sensors have a small electric heater built in so they reach operating temperature fast, instead of waiting for exhaust heat to warm them up. The computer watches the current draw on that heater circuit, and P0141 means it saw something wrong with it — not enough current, too much, or none at all. It is not a code about the sensor's oxygen reading itself. It is specifically about the heater part of that sensor not behaving the way the computer expects.
Is it safe to drive
Yes, generally. This is an emissions-related code, not one that affects how the engine runs day to day. You probably won't notice any difference in drivability. What you should watch for is the check engine light changing from steady to flashing, or other codes showing up alongside it, or any new symptoms like rough idle or poor fuel economy. Any of those means something more is going on and it's worth getting looked at sooner. On its own, P0141 can wait a couple weeks, but it will likely keep your car from passing an emissions test if your area requires one.
What commonly causes it
Roughly in order of how often we see it:
- Wiring or connector problems — a corroded or loose connector at the sensor, a chafed wire, or a spot where the harness rubs against something hot or moves near heat shields. This is common and cheap to fix if that's all it is.
- A blown fuse feeding the heater circuit, sometimes shared with other components.
- The heater element inside the sensor itself has failed. Sensors do wear out, especially past 100,000 miles or in a car that's had exhaust leaks or heat damage nearby.
- Less often, a problem in the PCM driver circuit itself, though this is rare compared to the wiring and sensor causes above.
Which of these is likeliest depends some on the engine and how the harness is routed on that particular platform — a V6 with two banks and longer harness runs behaves differently than an inline four. That's part of why we check wiring before assuming it's the sensor.
Diagnosis and rough cost
Diagnosis means checking the wiring and connector at the sensor, checking the fuse, and testing the actual current draw on the heater circuit with a meter or scan tool — not just reading the code and ordering a part. If it turns out to be wiring, that repair is usually inexpensive. If the sensor itself has failed, a replacement O2 sensor plus labor typically runs somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 to $350, depending on the vehicle and how accessible the sensor is. Cost varies enough by car that we'd rather give you a real number after we've actually looked at it than a guess now.
