What P0141 means

Your car has a second oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter (Bank 1, Sensor 2). That sensor has a small electric heater built into it so it reaches operating temperature fast, instead of waiting for exhaust heat to warm it up. P0141 means the computer is seeing something wrong with the electrical circuit for that heater. It is not saying the oxygen sensor itself is bad at reading oxygen. It is saying the heater side of it, or the wiring feeding it, isn't behaving the way it should.

Is it safe to drive

Yes. This sensor is downstream of the catalytic converter and is mainly there to monitor the converter's efficiency, not to control fuel mixture in real time. Your engine will run fine and you won't feel a difference. Get it looked at within the next couple weeks. Watch for the check engine light changing from steady to flashing, or any new roughness or smell, which would mean something else is going on and it's not just this.

What commonly causes it

Most often it's one of these, roughly in order of how often we see it:

1. The heater element inside the sensor itself has failed. Sensors don't last forever and this is the most common cause.
2. A wiring problem: a chafed or corroded wire in the harness near the sensor, or a corroded connector, especially on cars that see a lot of road salt or have been exposed to rodents.
3. A blown fuse or bad relay for the O2 heater circuit, which is less common but does happen.
4. On some vehicles, a wiring or connector issue at the PCM end rather than at the sensor. This is rarer but worth ruling out before spending money on parts.

Which one applies really depends on the engine and how the manufacturer wired that circuit, so we're not going to guess without checking. Some cars run the heater circuits through a shared fuse with other sensors, which changes what we check first.

What diagnosis involves and what it tends to cost

We start by pulling the code data and checking heater circuit voltage and resistance right at the sensor connector with a meter, rather than assuming it's the sensor. That tells us if the sensor itself is bad or if the problem is upstream in the wiring or fuse. This part usually takes under an hour.

If it turns out to be the sensor, replacement parts and labor together commonly run somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 to $350, depending on the vehicle and how hard that sensor is to reach. Some engines have it tucked in an easy spot, others make you remove other parts to get to it, and that changes labor time. If it's a wiring or connector repair instead, the cost is usually less, but it depends on how much harness needs to be opened up. We won't know which case you're in until we test it.

Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
