Your tire pressure light is on: what it means and what to do

An orange light shaped like a horseshoe with an exclamation mark inside it lights up on your dash, and if you have not seen it before, it is not obvious what it wants. That is your tire pressure warning light — the TPMS light, for tire pressure monitoring system — and it is one of the most common lights to come on, especially in the fall when the weather turns. It is easy to ignore because the car usually still drives fine, but it is worth understanding, because sometimes it means a two-minute fix and sometimes it means you have a slow leak that is about to become a flat on the freeway.

What the light is actually telling you

Every modern car monitors the air pressure in your tires and warns you when one or more drops meaningfully below where it should be — usually around 25 percent low. The reason it matters is that an underinflated tire is a genuine safety issue, not just a fuel-economy one. Low tires build up heat, wear out faster and unevenly, hurt your handling and braking, and in the worst case can fail at speed. They also cost you money at the pump every day they are low. So the light is not being fussy; it is flagging something that affects how the car stops and steers.

Why it so often comes on when it gets cold

If your TPMS light appears on the first genuinely cold morning of the year, you are not imagining a pattern. Air contracts as it cools, so tire pressure drops as the temperature drops — roughly one PSI for every ten degrees Fahrenheit. A tire that was set correctly on a warm afternoon in August can read low enough to trip the light on a cold October morning without anything actually being wrong with it. This is the single most common reason we get calls about the light this time of year around Graham. Often the fix is simply topping the tires back up to the correct pressure.

Here is the useful tell: if the light comes on cold in the morning and then goes off on its own after you have been driving for a while, that is the air warming and expanding back up to pressure. It usually means the tires are a bit low rather than leaking — but it is still worth setting them properly, because they were low enough to trip the warning.

What to do when it comes on

The light itself does not tell you which tire or how low, so the first job is to find out.

  • Check all four tires with a gauge. A cheap pencil or dial gauge does the job. Do it when the tires are cold — before you have driven far — because driving heats them and raises the reading.
  • Find the correct pressure. It is on a sticker in the driver's door jamb, not the number moulded into the tire sidewall — that sidewall number is the tire's maximum, not the right pressure for your car.
  • Set them to spec and see what happens. If they were just low and the light clears after driving, you are done. If one tire is noticeably lower than the others, or keeps going low after you fill it, you likely have a slow leak.
  • Look for the obvious. A nail or screw in the tread, a tire that looks visibly flatter than its neighbours, or a sidewall that looks damaged all point to a real problem rather than just cold weather.

When it is more than just cold weather

Cold air is the innocent explanation, but the light is also how a slow leak announces itself, and those are worth catching. A screw or nail picked up on the road can leak slowly enough that the tire looks fine for days while the light keeps nagging. A valve stem can perish and weep air. An older tire can start leaking around the bead where it seals to the wheel, especially if the wheel has some corrosion. None of these will necessarily leave you with a dramatic flat — they just quietly lose air, you keep topping it up, and one day it goes down at the worst possible moment. Getting a persistent slow leak looked at turns a roadside flat into a scheduled, cheap repair.

One light you should not just reset and ignore

It is tempting, once the car drives fine, to treat the light as a nuisance and look for a way to make it go away. Resist that. The TPMS light going out because you cleared it is not the same as the tires being properly inflated, and driving on low tires is one of those quiet risks that is invisible right up until a blowout. If the light keeps coming back after you have set the pressures correctly, that is the tires telling you there is a real leak to find, not a light to silence.

There is also a separate version of this light worth knowing about: if the TPMS light blinks for a while when you start the car and then stays on solid, that often means a fault in the monitoring system itself — commonly a dead sensor battery, since the sensors inside the wheels have batteries that eventually run out. Why did my tire pressure light come on when it got cold?
