What P0740 means
Your transmission has a torque converter, and inside it is a clutch that locks the engine to the transmission directly once you're up to speed. This saves fuel and cuts down on the slippage you'd otherwise feel from the fluid coupling. P0740 means the computer told that clutch to lock or unlock and did not see the response it expected. It's not naming a broken part. It's flagging that the lockup circuit isn't behaving the way it should.
Is it safe to drive
Usually yes, for now. Most cars will still shift and move fine with this code set. What you may notice is a shudder or slight surge around 45 to 65 mph, when lockup normally engages, or the transmission running a little hotter than usual since it's not locking up to relieve the torque converter. If you feel harsh or delayed shifts, or the transmission seems to slip, that's a different level of concern and you shouldn't keep driving on it. Watch the temperature gauge if you have one, and don't tow or push the car hard until it's looked at.
Common causes, most likely first
The most common cause is a worn or failing torque converter clutch solenoid, which is the small electrical valve that controls fluid pressure to the clutch. After that, low or degraded transmission fluid is a frequent cause, either from a low fluid level or fluid that's old and worn out and can't build the pressure needed to apply the clutch cleanly. Wiring and connector problems, especially corroded or loose connections at the transmission valve body, also show up often. Less commonly the issue is inside the torque converter itself, a worn clutch plate or a converter that's failing internally, which is a bigger job. On some GM and Ford models this code can also point to a valve body that needs attention rather than any single part. What's actually at fault depends on the specific transmission, so the exact cause varies by make and model.
What diagnosis involves and rough cost
Diagnosis starts with scanning for other stored codes, checking fluid level and condition, and pulling live data to watch how the solenoid and clutch respond when commanded. If the fluid is low or burnt, that gets addressed first since it can cause this code on its own. From there it's testing the solenoid and wiring before assuming the torque converter itself is bad. A fluid service runs in the range of a couple hundred dollars. A solenoid replacement is usually a few hundred more, depending on the transmission and how much labor it takes to get at it. If it turns out to be the torque converter or valve body, that's a bigger repair, often running well into four figures, since it usually means dropping the transmission. We wouldn't quote that until the diagnosis actually points there. This isn't something to ignore, but it's fine to get it in within the next week or two rather than treating it as an emergency.
Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
