What P0175 means
Your car has an oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter and another one before it, on the bank of the engine numbered "2" (the side that doesn't have cylinder 1). The computer watches the fuel trims on that bank and has decided the engine is running rich, meaning there's more fuel in the mix than there should be for the amount of air coming in. P0175 doesn't tell you why. It just tells you the computer noticed the imbalance and logged it.
Is it safe to drive
Generally yes, at least for a while. A rich condition wastes fuel and can leave a fuel smell or a bit of rough idle, but it's not the same as a misfire code, which can damage a catalytic converter if ignored. Keep an eye out for a strong gas smell, black exhaust smoke, or a rough-running engine getting worse. If any of those show up, don't wait on it. Otherwise this is a "get it looked at in the next week or two" code, not a "pull over now" code.
Common causes, roughly in order
A dirty or failing mass airflow sensor is one of the more frequent causes, since it tells the computer how much air is coming in, and if it reads low, the computer adds fuel to match. A leaking fuel injector on that bank, stuck slightly open, can also do it. Bad fuel pressure regulator, a bank 2 oxygen sensor that's failed or reporting wrong, and vacuum leaks specific to that side of the engine all show up regularly too. On some V6 and V8 engines, a bank 2 exhaust leak upstream of the sensor can throw off the reading and mimic a rich condition without the engine actually running rich. Which of these is likeliest depends a lot on the specific engine, since bank 2 wiring and sensor placement differ by make.
People often replace the oxygen sensor first because it's the part named in the code, but the sensor is usually just the messenger. Ruling out the airflow sensor, injectors, and fuel pressure first saves money more often than not.
What diagnosis involves and what it tends to cost
Proper diagnosis means pulling live fuel trim data and freeze frame data with a scan tool, not just reading the code and guessing. That usually means checking fuel trims at idle and under load, looking at the MAF sensor's actual readings against expected values, checking fuel pressure, and inspecting for exhaust or vacuum leaks on bank 2 specifically. That diagnostic work commonly runs somewhere in the range of one to two hours of labor, depending on how quickly the cause shows up.
Repair cost varies a lot depending on what's actually wrong. A vacuum leak might be a simple hose or gasket. A MAF sensor replacement is a moderate cost. Fuel injector work costs more, especially on engines where the injectors are harder to reach. We can give you a real number once we know which of these it actually is on your engine.
