What P0172 means
Your car's computer watches the oxygen sensors in the exhaust to see how much unburned oxygen is left after combustion. P0172 means it's seeing signs of too much fuel and not enough air in the mix, on bank 1 (the side of the engine with cylinder 1, on a V6 or V8). The computer tries to correct this by trimming fuel delivery, and when it runs out of room to correct, it sets the code. It's not naming a broken part. It's naming a symptom.
If you have a four-cylinder engine, there's only one bank, so "Bank 1" here just refers to the engine as a whole. If you have a V-type engine, you might see P0172 alone, or alongside P0175 for bank 2. Both banks running rich points more toward something shared, like the air filter or fuel pressure. Just one bank points more toward something specific to that side, like a sensor or an injector.
Is it safe to drive
Generally yes, for a while. A rich condition wastes gas and can make the engine idle rough, hesitate, or smell like fuel from the exhaust. Watch for a strong gas smell, black soot around the tailpipe, or the check engine light starting to flash instead of staying steady. A flashing light means misfire, which can damage the catalytic converter if you keep driving on it. That's worth getting looked at right away. A steady light with no other symptoms is fine to schedule in the next week or two.
Common causes, roughly in order
A dirty or failing mass airflow sensor is one of the more frequent causes; it tells the computer less air is coming in than actually is, so the computer adds too much fuel. A leaking or worn fuel injector, or one stuck slightly open, can do the same thing. A weak upstream oxygen sensor can send a false rich signal even when the mixture is fine. Fuel pressure that's too high, from a bad regulator, can richen things across the board. A dirty air filter restricting airflow contributes too, though it's rarely the whole story by itself. On some engines a leaking EVAP purge valve or a bad coolant temp sensor reading falsely cold (making the computer run rich like a cold start) plays a part. Which of these is likely depends on the engine and mileage, and there's no way to say for sure without looking at live data.
What diagnosis involves and what it tends to cost
Diagnosis means pulling live fuel trim numbers and freeze frame data, checking the MAF sensor's readings against expected values, looking at fuel pressure, and inspecting for vacuum or exhaust leaks that can also trick the O2 sensor. That usually runs somewhere in the neighborhood of an hour of diagnostic time before we know what's actually wrong. Repairs vary a lot depending on cause: a MAF sensor cleaning or replacement is on the lower end, an injector or fuel pressure regulator is more, and if it turns out to be a wiring or vacuum leak the labor time can vary. We won't know which one applies until we test it, and we'd rather tell you that than guess.
