What P0172 means

Your engine has sensors in the exhaust, upstream of the catalytic converter, that measure how much oxygen is left over after combustion. On Bank 1 (the side of the engine with cylinder 1), the computer is seeing less oxygen than it expects, over a sustained period. That means there's more fuel in the mix than there should be, relative to the air coming in. "Rich" just means too much fuel, or not enough air, for the amount of fuel being burned. The code doesn't tell you which one is wrong, only that the ratio is off.

Is it safe to drive

Yes, for now. A rich condition wastes gas and can make the engine idle a little rough or smell like exhaust, but it won't strand you today. Watch for a check engine light that starts flashing instead of staying steady, or a strong fuel smell, or the car stalling. Any of those means stop and get it looked at sooner rather than later. Left alone for months, a rich condition can foul spark plugs and damage the catalytic converter, which is a more expensive fix than the original problem.

Common causes, roughly in order

A dirty or failing mass airflow (MAF) sensor is the most frequent cause. It tells the computer less air is coming in than actually is, so the computer adds fuel to match a reading that's already wrong. After that, a leaking or stuck-open fuel injector, a fuel pressure regulator that's letting too much pressure build, and a failing oxygen sensor itself all show up regularly. A clogged air filter can starve the intake enough to throw this too, and it's the cheapest thing to check first. On some engines, a bad EVAP purge valve stuck open dumps extra fuel vapor into the intake, which reads the same way. The exact usual suspect varies by engine family, and a shop that's seen your specific engine before will often have a decent guess before it's even on the lift.

What diagnosis involves and what it tends to cost

Diagnosis starts with pulling live data, fuel trims specifically, to see how hard the computer is already compensating and under what conditions the rich condition shows up. That's usually paired with a visual check of the air filter, intake hoses, and any obvious fuel smell or leak, then testing the MAF sensor and checking fuel pressure. That diagnostic work commonly runs somewhere in the range of one to two hours of labor, depending on how quickly the cause turns up.

The repair itself varies a lot depending on what's actually wrong. A MAF sensor or air filter is on the cheaper end. A fuel pressure regulator or an injector is more. We wouldn't want to quote a number without seeing the car, because replacing the wrong part based on a guess is the way people end up spending money twice.

Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
