What P0131 means
This code means the computer is reading a low voltage signal from the oxygen sensor on Bank 1, Sensor 1. That's the sensor before the catalytic converter, on the side of the engine with cylinder 1. A low reading usually gets interpreted by the computer as the engine running lean, meaning too much air relative to fuel. The code doesn't mean the sensor itself is bad. It means the signal coming from that sensor's circuit is low, and there are several reasons that can happen.
Is it safe to drive
Yes, for now. A car running lean can hesitate, surge a little, or feel slightly rough at idle, but it's not going to strand you. Watch for the check engine light changing from steady to flashing, or any new engine shaking, which would mean it's misfiring and should not wait. Short term, this is a "get it looked at soon" code, not a "pull over now" code.
What commonly causes it
Roughly in order of how often we see it:
A vacuum leak or intake air leak downstream of the mass airflow sensor, letting in unmetered air. This is the single most common cause across most engines. Next is a genuinely worn out or contaminated oxygen sensor, which happens with age and mileage. After that, wiring problems: a chafed wire, corroded connector, or bad ground in the sensor's harness can pull the signal down without the sensor being at fault at all. Fuel delivery issues can also do it, such as a weak fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter starving the engine at higher demand. Less often, an exhaust leak near the sensor lets outside air reach it and skews the reading low. Which of these is likeliest depends some on the engine. Some V6 and V8 layouts have more vacuum hose and gasket surface area to leak from, while some four cylinders are more prone to intake manifold gasket leaks specifically.
Diagnosis and rough cost
Diagnosis starts with pulling the freeze frame data and live sensor readings, not just replacing the sensor. A smoke test checks for vacuum and intake leaks. The mechanic will also look at fuel trim numbers and check the wiring and connector at the sensor itself before condemning the sensor. That diagnostic time typically runs somewhere in the range of an hour of labor, sometimes less if the problem shows up fast.
If it turns out to be a vacuum leak, fixing a hose or gasket is usually a moderate repair. If the sensor itself is bad, sensors themselves aren't usually expensive but labor to access Bank 1 Sensor 1 varies a lot by engine, since some are easy to reach and others are buried under the intake. Wiring repairs are usually cheaper than either. We can't give you a firm number without seeing which of these it actually is, and anyone who quotes a price before testing the wiring and checking for leaks is guessing.
