What P0131 means

This code means the computer is seeing a low voltage signal from the oxygen sensor on Bank 1, Sensor 1. That's the sensor before the catalytic converter, on the side of the engine that holds cylinder 1. A low reading there usually gets read by the computer as the engine running lean, meaning too much air and not enough fuel in the mix. The code itself is not saying the sensor is bad. It's just reporting what the sensor told it, or what it looks like the sensor told it. Those are two different things, and figuring out which one you've got is most of the job.

Is it safe to drive

Generally yes, for a while. A lean condition can make the engine run rough, hesitate, or use more gas, and if it's severe enough, running lean over time can cause engine damage from higher combustion temperatures. Watch for a check engine light that starts flashing, unusual engine noise, or a real loss of power. Any of those mean stop driving and get it looked at right away. Otherwise, this is a get-it-checked-soon situation, not a pull-over-now one.

What commonly causes it

Roughly in order of how often we see them:

Vacuum leaks. A cracked hose or a bad intake gasket lets extra air in that the computer didn't account for. This is probably the most common cause across the board.

Fuel delivery problems. A weak fuel pump, clogged injector, or low fuel pressure can starve the engine of fuel even though the sensor and wiring are fine.

The oxygen sensor itself, worn out or contaminated. This does happen, but it's often not the first thing to check, not the last.

Wiring and connector issues. Corroded pins, a chafed wire, or a loose ground can drop the signal voltage without anything being wrong with the sensor.

Exhaust leaks upstream of the sensor, which let outside air reach it and skew the reading.

What's actually behind it varies by engine. Some engines are known for intake gasket leaks, others for injector issues, others for sensor wiring routed somewhere it rubs through over time. There's no single answer that fits every car.

What diagnosis involves and rough cost

A proper diagnosis means checking live sensor data and fuel trims with a scan tool, inspecting for vacuum and exhaust leaks, and checking wiring and connectors before anything gets replaced. That takes some shop time, and it's worth paying for rather than just swapping the sensor and hoping.

Cost varies a lot depending on what's actually wrong. A vacuum hose or connector repair is inexpensive. A new oxygen sensor is a moderate cost, parts and labor. Fuel pump or injector work runs more. We can't tell you which one you need without looking at the car, and we'd rather diagnose it properly than guess.
