P0120

Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction

GET CHECKED SOON

Powertrain · Fuel and air · generic OBD-II code

What does P0120 mean?

A fault in the throttle or pedal-position sensor circuit.

Can I drive with P0120?

A steady check-engine light with the car otherwise behaving normally usually means you can drive carefully to get it diagnosed — but a flashing light, shaking, lost power, or a strong fuel smell changes that. When in doubt, treat it as more serious. See Can I Drive It? for a quick read on your exact symptoms.

Common symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Reduced power or a limp mode
  • Rough or unstable idle

Possible causes

Possible causes include — not “the part is definitely bad”:

  • A wiring or connector fault
  • A failing throttle or pedal sensor
  • A throttle-body issue

What P0120 does not prove

It does not prove the throttle sensor or throttle body has failed — the same code can come from wiring, connectors, or a correlation problem between sensors.

What you can safely check

  • Whether the light is steady or flashing
  • Whether the car has dropped into a reduced-power mode
  • That the throttle and pedal feel normal

What a shop may check

An example diagnostic direction, not a guaranteed procedure:

  • Scan tool and live throttle and pedal-position data
  • The wiring and connectors
  • The throttle body and its motor where fitted
  • A check for correlation faults between sensors

What not to do

  • Don’t clean or replace the throttle body blindly
  • Don’t keep driving hard in a reduced-power mode without diagnosis

Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
