P0114

Intake Air Temperature Circuit Intermittent

GENERALLY OK TO PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Powertrain · Fuel and air · generic OBD-II code

What does P0114 mean?

The intake-air-temperature signal is intermittent.

Can I drive with P0114?

This one is usually fine to drive with in the short term while you get it checked — unless the light starts flashing or the car develops other symptoms. “Generally OK” does not mean nothing is wrong. See Can I Drive It? for a quick read on your exact symptoms.

Common symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Usually little or no drivability change
  • Occasionally hard cold starts or slightly off running

Possible causes

Possible causes include — not “the part is definitely bad”:

  • A loose connector
  • An intermittent wire
  • A failing sensor

What P0114 does not prove

It does not prove the temperature sensor has failed — the reading can be thrown off by wiring, a connector, or the sensor’s ground.

What you can safely check

  • Whether the light is steady or flashing
  • That the intake and sensor connector look intact

What a shop may check

An example diagnostic direction, not a guaranteed procedure:

  • Scan tool and live intake-air-temperature data
  • The sensor wiring and connector
  • A comparison against coolant temperature at cold start

What not to do

  • Don’t assume the sensor is bad without checking the wiring
  • Don’t ignore it if other running problems appear

Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
