What P0101 means
Your engine has a mass air flow sensor that measures how much air is coming in, so the computer knows how much fuel to add. This code doesn't mean the sensor is dead. It means the sensor is sending a signal, but the reading doesn't match what the computer expects given engine speed, throttle position, and load. That's a "range/performance" problem, not a "no signal" problem, and the distinction matters for diagnosis.
Is it safe to drive
Usually yes, for now. Common symptoms are rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, poor fuel economy, or the engine running a little rich or lean. Watch for stalling, especially at idle or when slowing to a stop, and for the check engine light flashing rather than staying solid, which points to a misfire and means you shouldn't keep driving on it. If the car is running fine otherwise, you have some time, but sensor problems like this tend to get worse rather than fix themselves.
What usually causes it
Most common first: a dirty or contaminated MAF sensor, often from an aftermarket air filter that was oiled or from a filter that let dust past it. After that, a vacuum leak or a crack in the intake ducting between the sensor and the throttle body, which lets unmetered air in and confuses the reading. Also common: a wiring or connector problem at the sensor, corrosion, a loose ground, or a connector that's not fully seated. Less often, the sensor itself has failed internally. On some engines a dirty throttle body or a leaking PCV hose can throw the same code. Which of these is likely depends some on the engine, direct injection engines and turbocharged engines each have their own quirks with vacuum leaks and intake plumbing, so we look at the actual layout rather than assume.
Diagnosis and rough cost
Diagnosis starts with pulling live data, the actual MAF reading at idle and at higher RPM compared to what's normal for that engine, and a visual check of the intake tract for cracks, loose clamps, or a disconnected hose. We check the wiring and connector before touching the sensor itself. If the sensor is just dirty, cleaning it with the right cleaner sometimes solves it for little cost. If it's a vacuum leak or a torn intake boot, that part gets replaced. If the sensor has actually failed, a new one runs anywhere from under a hundred dollars to a few hundred depending on the car, plus labor, which is usually not long once the part is confirmed bad. We won't recommend a new MAF sensor until we've ruled out the cheaper causes first, since replacing it without checking those tends to bring the code right back.
Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
