What does P0087 mean?
Fuel pressure is below the expected range.
Can I drive with P0087?
A steady check-engine light with the car otherwise behaving normally usually means you can drive carefully to get it diagnosed — but a flashing light, shaking, lost power, or a strong fuel smell changes that. Possible causes
Possible causes include — not “the part is definitely bad”:
- A weak fuel pump
- A clogged fuel filter
- A pressure regulator or sensor fault
What P0087 does not prove
It does not prove the fuel pump has failed. Fuel pressure faults can come from the regulator, a filter, the sensor, or wiring as well as the pump.
What you can safely check
- Whether the light is steady or flashing
- Whether it struggles under acceleration or load
- For a fuel smell — do not keep cranking if strong
What a shop may check
An example diagnostic direction, not a guaranteed procedure:
- Scan tool and live fuel-pressure data
- Fuel pump and pressure regulator operation
- The fuel filter and delivery
- Wiring and control of the fuel system
What not to do
- Don’t keep cranking with a strong fuel smell
- Don’t replace the pump before pressure is actually tested
