What P0128 means

Your engine has a computer-controlled thermostat system, and it watches how long the coolant takes to reach normal operating temperature after you start the car. P0128 means the engine took longer than it should have to warm up, or never got there. It's not naming a broken part. It's reporting that the coolant is running cooler than expected for how long the engine has been running.

Is it safe to drive

Yes, generally. A stuck-open thermostat doesn't strand you and won't damage the engine right away. What it does cost you is fuel economy and heater performance, since the engine is running cooler than it's designed to. In cold weather you may notice the heater blowing cool or lukewarm air, or the temperature gauge sitting lower than normal. Keep an eye out for the gauge doing anything strange when the code shows up, and if you notice actual overheating (gauge climbing high, warning lights), that's a different and more urgent problem. This one can wait a couple weeks, but don't ignore it all winter.

What commonly causes it

Most often it really is the thermostat stuck open or not sealing right, so coolant flows freely through the radiator all the time instead of being held back until the engine warms up. That's the most common cause across most engines. But a few other things can trigger the same code:

- The coolant temperature sensor itself giving a bad or slow reading, even if the thermostat is fine.
- Low coolant level, so the sensor isn't reading a full, properly circulating system.
- Wiring or connector issues at the sensor.
- On some engines, a bad electronically-controlled thermostat (rather than the older wax-pellet type) can report a fault code on its own without acting stuck.

Which of these is likely depends some on the engine. Older engines with a simple mechanical thermostat, the thermostat itself is the usual suspect. Newer engines with an electronically controlled thermostat, the control circuit or the sensor is more often in play, and diagnosis takes a bit more time to sort out.

Diagnosis and rough cost

Diagnosis usually starts with checking the actual coolant temperature against what the computer is reading, checking coolant level and condition, and looking at the thermostat's behavior as the engine warms up. That's a fairly quick check, not an all-day job. If it turns out to be the thermostat itself, replacement is a common, moderately priced repair — parts and labor together tend to run somewhere in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars on most cars, more on engines where the thermostat is buried and harder to reach. If it's the coolant temperature sensor instead, that's usually cheaper. We won't know which one it is, or the exact price, until we've actually looked at your car.
