What does P0501 mean?
The vehicle-speed signal is out of the expected range.
Can I drive with P0501?
A steady check-engine light with the car otherwise behaving normally usually means you can drive carefully to get it diagnosed — but a flashing light, shaking, lost power, or a strong fuel smell changes that. - A speed-sensor fault
- Wiring or a connector
- A related wheel-speed input
What P0501 does not prove
It does not prove the speed sensor has failed — wiring, connectors, or a related module can also set it.

- Whether the speedometer reads correctly
- Whether the light is steady or flashing
What a shop may check

- Scan tool and live vehicle-speed data
- The speed sensor wiring and connector
- A check of related wheel-speed inputs
What not to do
- Don’t replace the sensor before the wiring is checked
Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
