What P0500 means

This code means the engine computer isn't getting a proper signal from the vehicle speed sensor, or the signal it's getting doesn't make sense. The vehicle speed sensor tells the computer how fast the car is moving down the road, separate from engine RPM. That information gets used for a lot more than just your speedometer. It factors into shift timing, idle control, cruise control, and ABS or stability control on many vehicles. So a bad signal here can cause problems that seem unrelated to speed at all.

Is it safe to drive

Usually yes, for a short while. Most cars will still drive and stop normally with this code set. What you'll likely notice is a speedometer that reads wrong or drops to zero while moving, a transmission that shifts oddly, hard, or late, or a check engine light staying on. If your car also has ABS, traction control, or stability control tied into this same sensor, those systems may shut themselves off as a precaution, and you'd lose that backup safety net without losing normal braking. If the ABS or traction light comes on with it, or the transmission starts hunting for gears or slipping, get it looked at sooner rather than later. If it's just the check engine light and the speedometer acting up, it can wait a few days, not indefinitely.

What usually causes it

Most common is the speed sensor itself, either failed or with a loose or corroded connector. After that, wiring damage is common too: a chafed wire, a connector full of road salt or moisture, or a wire rubbed through near the transmission or rear axle where the sensor usually lives. On some vehicles there's no separate sensor at all; the signal comes from inside the transmission or from the ABS wheel speed sensors instead, and the problem is really there. Less often, it's a tone ring (a toothed wheel the sensor reads) that's damaged, cracked, or has debris packed into it. Where exactly to look depends a lot on the engine and transmission combination, so we don't assume it's the sensor until we've actually checked the wiring and the signal itself.

Diagnosis and rough cost

Diagnosis means pulling the code, checking freeze frame data, then testing the sensor's wiring and signal with a meter or scope rather than just swapping the part. That's usually a half hour to an hour of shop time. If it turns out to be the sensor itself, parts and labor together are commonly somewhere in the $150 to $350 range, though it varies a good deal by vehicle, since some sensors are a five minute job and others require dropping part of the transmission or a wheel bearing assembly to get at them. If it's wiring, cost depends entirely on where the damage is and how much is involved to repair it properly. We can give you a firm number once we've actually looked at the car.
