What P0500 means
This code means the engine computer isn't getting a clean signal from the vehicle speed sensor, or isn't getting one at all. That sensor tells the computer how fast the car is moving down the road, separate from engine RPM. The computer uses that number for things like shifting the transmission, controlling idle when you're coasting to a stop, and running cruise control. When the signal drops out or looks wrong, the computer sets this code.
The name says "vehicle speed sensor" but that's really just the symptom the computer is describing. It doesn't mean that part has actually failed. Could be the sensor, could be wiring, could be something else feeding into the same signal path.
Is it safe to drive
Usually yes, short term. Common symptoms are a speedometer that reads wrong or drops to zero, a transmission that shifts oddly or feels like it's hunting for gears, cruise control that won't engage or won't hold speed, and sometimes the ABS or traction control light coming on too, since those systems often share speed data. Watch for harsh or delayed shifts, or the transmission getting stuck in one gear (limp mode). If that happens, get it looked at sooner rather than later. Don't rely on cruise control until it's fixed, and don't trust the speedometer if it's acting erratic.
Common causes, most likely first
- Wiring: a broken, corroded, or chafed wire to the speed sensor, often where it runs near the transmission or through the harness to the wheel. This is the most common cause.
- The vehicle speed sensor itself, worn out or damaged.
- A dirty or damaged tone ring or reluctor (the toothed wheel the sensor reads), usually inside or near the transmission.
- A bad connector or corrosion at the plug.
- Less often, a problem with the transmission control module or wiring to the ABS module, since some vehicles calculate vehicle speed from the wheel speed sensors instead of a standalone sensor.
Where the sensor is located, and what commonly fails, depends a lot on the vehicle. Some engines mount it on the transmission tailhousing, others pull the signal from the ABS system entirely. That difference changes both the diagnosis and the cost.
Diagnosis and rough cost
Diagnosis starts with checking live data on a scan tool to see if the speed signal is present, dropping out, or just wrong, then testing the wiring and connector before touching the sensor. That part of the job usually runs an hour or so of shop time, since testing takes longer than people expect.
If it turns out to be the sensor itself, replacement is usually a moderate job, roughly in the low hundreds of dollars with parts and labor, though it varies by vehicle and how hard the sensor is to get to. If it's wiring, cost depends on where the break is and how much of the harness needs repair. If it turns out to be a tone ring or a control module, that's a bigger job and worth getting a clear diagnosis before agreeing to any repair.
