What does P0446 mean?

A fault in the EVAP vent control circuit or valve.

Can I drive with P0446?

This one is usually fine to drive with in the short term while you get it checked — unless the light starts flashing or the car develops other symptoms. “Generally OK” does not mean nothing is wrong. See Can I Drive It? for a quick read on your exact symptoms.

• Check engine light
• A faint fuel smell in some cases
• No drivability change in most cases

Possible causes

Possible causes include — not “the part is definitely bad”:

• A stuck or faulty vent valve
• A blocked vent or filter
• Wiring

What P0446 does not prove

It does not prove which EVAP part is at fault. A loose gas cap, a cracked hose, a purge or vent valve, or the charcoal canister can all set EVAP codes — the leak has to be located, not guessed.

What you can safely check

• That the gas cap is present and clicked tight (a very common EVAP cause)
• Whether the light is steady
• For an obvious fuel smell

What a shop may check

An example diagnostic direction, not a guaranteed procedure:

• Scan tool and EVAP monitor data
• A smoke test of the EVAP system for leaks
• The purge and vent valves
• The gas cap seal and filler neck

What not to do

• Don’t randomly replace EVAP parts — a leak needs to be located first
• Don’t skip the simplest cause: the gas cap

Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
