What P0440 means
This code is about the evaporative emission control system, usually called EVAP. That's the system that captures gas fumes from your fuel tank instead of letting them vent into the air, and stores them in a charcoal canister until the engine can burn them off. P0440 means the computer ran a check on this system and found something wrong with how it's sealing or purging, but it's a general code. It doesn't tell you which part is at fault, just that the system as a whole isn't behaving the way it should.
Is it safe to drive
Yes. This is an emissions code, not an engine or safety code. It won't affect how the car runs, and you won't feel any difference driving it. The main things to watch are a faint smell of gas near the fuel filler area, or the check engine light changing from steady to flashing, which would mean something else entirely. If the light is just on steady and the car drives normally, this can wait. No need to treat it as an emergency.
What commonly causes it
Commonest first:
- A loose or bad gas cap. This is the single most common cause by a wide margin. Cap not tightened all the way, or the seal on it worn out.
- A cracked or split hose somewhere in the EVAP system. These hoses run from the tank up to the canister and to the engine, and they degrade with age and heat.
- The purge valve or vent valve stuck open or not sealing. These are small solenoids the computer uses to control airflow in the system.
- A leak in the charcoal canister itself, or in the fuel tank sending unit seal.
- Less often, a bad seal at the filler neck, or a failing EVAP pressure sensor giving a false reading even though the system itself is fine.
Which of these is likely depends some on the vehicle. Some engines have EVAP systems with more hoses and connections than others, and older vehicles tend to develop hose cracks that newer ones don't. There's no single part that's the usual suspect across the board.
Diagnosis and rough cost
First thing worth doing yourself: check that the gas cap is tight and not obviously cracked. If that doesn't clear the light after a few drive cycles, it needs a proper smoke test. That's where a machine pushes smoke into the sealed EVAP system and a tech watches for where it escapes. That's really the only reliable way to find a small leak, since the components aren't visible without pulling things apart.
Cost varies a lot depending on what's actually wrong. A gas cap replacement is inexpensive. A smoke test to find the leak, plus a hose or valve repair, runs more, and a canister replacement more still. We wouldn't want to quote a number without actually testing the system first, since guessing at the part costs more in wasted parts and labor than it saves.
