What P0420 means

Your car has two oxygen sensors on that side of the engine, one before the catalytic converter and one after. The computer compares what they read. If the converter is doing its job, the reading after it should look a lot cleaner than the reading before it. P0420 means the computer isn't seeing enough difference between the two. It's not a direct measurement of the converter failing. It's a comparison that came back looking off.

Is it safe to drive

Yes, for now. This code by itself doesn't mean the engine is running badly or that something is about to break. It mainly affects emissions, not drivability. Watch for other symptoms showing up alongside it: a rotten egg smell from the exhaust, a drop in fuel economy, or a rough idle. If any of those show up, or if the check engine light starts flashing instead of staying steady, that's a different situation and worth getting looked at sooner. Otherwise this is a fine one to put on the calendar for next month rather than drop everything for.

What usually causes it

The obvious answer is a worn-out catalytic converter, and sometimes that's exactly it, especially on an older car with high mileage. But a good number of these codes trace back to something upstream of the converter that's making it look bad on paper without the converter itself being the problem. Commonest causes, roughly in order:

An oxygen sensor that's aging or reading slow, on either side of the converter. An exhaust leak near the sensors, letting outside air skew the reading. A engine running slightly rich or lean from something unrelated, like a vacuum leak, a bad spark plug, or an injector issue, which can make even a healthy converter look inefficient. Less often, a converter that's actually worn or clogged. Which of these is likely depends some on the engine. Older V6 and V8s with two catalytic converters tend to see this from age and mileage. Smaller four-cylinders more often turn out to be a sensor or a leak.

What diagnosis involves and what it tends to cost

Diagnosis starts with pulling the freeze frame data and checking the oxygen sensor readings live, not just replacing parts based on the code. Tony usually checks for exhaust leaks and looks at fuel trims before deciding whether the converter itself is really the issue. That process is usually an hour or so of shop time.

If it turns out to be a sensor or a leak, the repair is often on the cheaper side, roughly in the low hundreds depending on the sensor and labor to access it. If the converter itself needs replacing, that's a bigger job, often several hundred dollars and up depending on the vehicle, since converters vary a lot in price and some cars have them built into the exhaust manifold rather than as a separate part. We'd rather find out which one it actually is before quoting a number, since replacing a converter that didn't need it doesn't fix anything.
