What P0325 means

The knock sensor is a small microphone-like sensor bolted to the engine block. Its job is to listen for detonation, the pinging sound an engine makes when fuel ignites unevenly. When the computer hears knock, it pulls timing to protect the engine. P0325 means the computer isn't getting a proper signal from that sensor circuit at all, not that it's actually detected knock. It's a wiring and signal problem, not a "your engine is knocking" problem.

Is it safe to drive

Yes, for now. Without a working knock sensor, the computer usually falls back to a more conservative timing map to protect the engine from damage it can't detect early. You may notice a little less power or slightly worse fuel economy, or you may notice nothing at all. Watch for actual pinging or rattling under acceleration, rough running, or the check engine light starting to flash instead of staying steady. Any of those means stop treating it as routine and get it looked at sooner.

What commonly causes it

Most often it's the wiring, not the sensor. A loose or corroded connector at the sensor, a chafed wire rubbing against the block or a bracket, or a ground issue are all common. The sensor itself can fail, but it's usually not the first thing to check. On some engines, a bad connection at the ECM side of the harness causes the same code. Heat cycling and age make the wiring more likely to be the culprit than the sensor on higher-mileage cars.

What's normal for the wiring also depends on the engine. Some V6 and V8 layouts have two knock sensors, one per bank, buried under the intake manifold, which makes the wiring harder to get at and the labor longer. Four-cylinder engines usually have one sensor sitting somewhere more accessible on top or side of the block. So the same code can mean a quick fix on one engine and a more involved one on another.

Diagnosis and rough cost

Diagnosis starts with a scan tool check of live sensor data, then a visual and continuity check of the wiring and connector before anyone touches the sensor itself. That's the right order because replacing a sensor that was never bad doesn't fix a chafed wire. Expect a diagnostic charge for that inspection.

If it turns out to be a connector or a wiring repair, that's usually a lower-cost fix, often under a couple hundred dollars in labor and parts. If the sensor itself needs replacing, cost depends heavily on where it sits. An accessible sensor might be a quick job. One buried under an intake manifold means more labor hours, since the manifold has to come off to reach it. We'd rather tell you that up front than guess at a number before actually looking at your engine.
