What P0562 means

This code means the engine computer is seeing lower voltage on the electrical system than it expects. It's not looking at one part, it's looking at overall system voltage, usually somewhere under about 11.5 to 12 volts while the engine is running. When it sees that, it logs P0562 and often turns on the check engine light or battery light, because a lot of other systems depend on stable voltage to work correctly.

This is different from a code that names a specific sensor or actuator. It's the computer saying "the whole system is running low," which could point to several different things upstream.

Is it safe to drive

Short trips are usually fine in the near term, but this isn't something to ignore for long. Low system voltage can cause other modules to behave oddly, things like flickering gauges, dim or flickering lights, slow power windows, a rough idle, or the car stalling and being hard to restart. If you see any of that, or the battery light is on steady, get it looked at sooner rather than later. If the voltage drops far enough the car can just die while you're driving it, often with little warning.

Common causes, most likely first

The alternator is the usual suspect, either it's not producing enough output or it's producing output but not regulating it correctly. After that, a weak or failing battery is common, especially if it's old or has been through a lot of short trips without full charging. Corroded or loose battery cables and ground connections cause this too, and they're cheap to fix if that's the actual problem. On some vehicles a bad connection or wiring fault in the charging circuit itself, separate from the alternator, will trigger the same code. Less commonly, the voltage regulator (built into the alternator on most modern cars, separate on some older ones) or the PCM's own sensing circuit is at fault. Which of these is likely can depend on the vehicle. Some engines run external voltage regulators, some use smart charging systems that vary voltage on purpose depending on load and battery state, and those need to be read correctly or they can look like a fault when they aren't.

What diagnosis involves and rough cost

Diagnosis starts with testing actual battery voltage and alternator output under load, checking charging circuit wiring and grounds, and pulling live data to see how voltage behaves at idle versus higher RPM and under electrical load. That usually takes under an hour of shop time to sort out which component is actually the problem, though wiring issues can take longer to chase down. Cost varies a lot depending on what's found. A cleaned or replaced cable connection is inexpensive. Battery replacement and alternator replacement cost more, and prices vary by vehicle.
