P0014

Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 2)

GET CHECKED SOON

Powertrain · Timing · generic OBD-II code

What does P0014 mean?

Cam timing on bank 2 is more advanced than commanded.

Can I drive with P0014?

A steady check-engine light with the car otherwise behaving normally usually means you can drive carefully to get it diagnosed — but a flashing light, shaking, lost power, or a strong fuel smell changes that. When in doubt, treat it as more serious. See Can I Drive It? for a quick read on your exact symptoms.

Common symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Rough idle or a rattle at start-up
  • Reduced power or economy
  • Sometimes a limp mode

Possible causes

Possible causes include — not “the part is definitely bad”:

  • A stuck timing solenoid or actuator
  • Dirty or low oil
  • A clogged oil passage

What P0014 does not prove

It does not prove the variable-timing actuator or solenoid has failed. Dirty or low oil, a clogged screen, or wiring can all upset cam timing.

What you can safely check

  • Whether the light is steady or flashing
  • Whether oil has been changed on schedule (VVT relies on clean oil at the right level)
  • For a start-up rattle

What a shop may check

An example diagnostic direction, not a guaranteed procedure:

  • Scan tool and live cam-timing data
  • Oil level and condition
  • The variable-timing solenoid, its wiring and screen
  • Actual cam timing versus commanded

What not to do

  • Don’t replace the timing solenoid before checking oil condition and wiring
  • Don’t run the engine low on oil

Generic OBD-II guidance — manufacturer-specific codes and causes vary by make, so always confirm against your vehicle. A code identifies a system or condition; it does not, on its own, prove which part has failed.
