The Ultimate Used Car Buying Checklist

Part 1: Exterior Visual Inspection

Tires: Check tread depth and for uneven wear. All four should match.
Paint & Body: Look for scratches, dents, rust, and mismatched paint (sign of repair).
Glass: Inspect windshield, windows, and mirrors for cracks or large chips.
Lights: Test headlights (high/low beams), taillights, brake lights, and turn signals.
Frame: Look underneath for any signs of frame damage or rust.

Part 2: Interior Visual Inspection

Upholstery: Check seats and headliner for rips, stains, or excessive wear.
Odor Check: Sniff for smoke, mildew, or heavy air freshener (covering something up).
Electronics: Test the radio, infotainment screen, USB ports, and all power windows/locks.
HVAC: Test the air conditioning (cold) and the heater (hot).
Dashboard: Check for any active warning lights after starting the car.

Part 3: Under the Hood (Engine Off)

Fluids: Check oil, coolant, and transmission fluid levels and condition. Oil shouldn't be milky.
Belts & Hoses: Look for cracks, fraying, or leaks.
Battery: Check for corrosion on the terminals. Ask for its age.
Leaks: Look for any visible signs of fluid leaks on the engine or on the ground below.

Part 4: The Test Drive

Engine Noise: Listen for any knocking, ticking, or strange sounds on startup and while driving.
Brakes: Test for grinding, squealing, or pulling to one side when braking.
Steering & Alignment: Does the car pull to one side? Is there vibration in the steering wheel?
Transmission: Feel for smooth shifts (automatic) or listen for grinding (manual).
Suspension: Drive over a small bump. Does the car bounce excessively?

Part 5: Questions for the Seller

Do you have the vehicle history report (e.g., CARFAX)?
Are there any service or maintenance records available?
Has the vehicle ever been in an accident?
Why are you selling the vehicle? (For private sellers)
Is the title "clean," or is it a "salvage" or "rebuilt" title?
